Well known motherboard maker ASUSTek which makes motherboards under the brand name ASUS had its site hacked on Friday. Hackers injected ASUSTek’s site with malicious software which takes advantage of a recently discovered Windows exploit.
The hackers inserted an ‘invisible frame’ termed an iFrame into ASUS’ site which redirected visitors to another site from where malicious software was downloaded to their computers.
This malicious software was meant to compromise users’ computers by taking advantage of a recently discovered Windows flaw which afflicts animated cursor files in a Windows system.
Kaspersky labs confirmed reports of ASUS’ site being hacked on its website. The SANS Internet Storm Center (ISC) too confirmed the reports. However it claimed to have found some other malicious code on ASUS’ site which didn’t exploit the animated cursor vulnerability on Windows systems.
ASUS has had its site hacked on previous occasions too which is unfortunate considering the popularity of its products which potentially pulls many visitors to its site.
