Here is another derogatory report of Microsoft’s foray into security software. Earlier, Aussie security company PC Tools brought forth research claiming that Windows Defender was able to detect only 46% to 53% of spyware. Now, Austrian researchers have claimed once again the infectivity of Redmond-based giant Microsoft’s products by conducting a security test wherein MICROSOFT’S Live OneCare came last.

The AV Comparatives Web site brings forth the results of the top most anti-virus products against a listing of almost half a million individual pieces of malware. The research was conducted amongst the 17 AV programs, and out of the 17 AV programs, Vole’s OneCare came last, standing behind the winner G Data Security’s AntiVirusKit (AVK), which detected 99.5% of the pernicious code. OneCare dealt with only 82.4% of the malware.

Further, big names like Symantec’s Norton anti-virus and McAfee’s VirusScan found 96.8 % and 91.6% each. Only Symantec’s Norton AntiVirus and ESET’s NO D32 anti-virus got hold of every variant of the 12 polymorphic families. OneCare was able to come up to 15th, spotting every version of just two families, and missing seven of the polymorphic families completely.
