Gary McKinnon had been protecting himself against the order in the UK Court of Appeal, after being determined by Home Secretary John Reid in 2006 that the expatriation ought to carry on against him. So, self-confessed PC buff from north London, McKinnon will now be prosecuted in the US against allegations of burglarizing and bringing about damages to US Government PCs. McKinnon has been charged with having penetrated PCs associated with the US Army, US Navy, US Air Force, Department of Defense and NASA. He is told to have said that he burglarized the networks just to come across private info regarding anti-gravity propulsion systems and extra-terrestrial technology, which was supposed by him that the authorities were secreting from the public. He is also claimed to have piloted a high profile crusade to steer clear of extradition, backed up by several other PC hackers. Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, was quoted as saying, The US Government is taking a hard line towards cybercrime, and certainly won’t tolerate anyone trying to compromise its own computers – McKinnon really should have considered this before he went UFO-hunting. This decision will doubtless send shockwaves through the hacking community, but irrespective of McKinnon’s motivations, computing hacker is illegal both in the UK and the US, and it’s high time people started thinking twice before engaging in such activities.
