An increase in virus and spyware levels through January has landed to warnings of an increased threat of identity theft for Internet users. Statistics from PC Tools brings forth that malware behavior has upped by over 50% previous month, increasing to the 41% increase noticed during the Christmas period. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) claimed that UK web users are potentially the most vulnerable to lose their identities as result of not taking ample precautions while they are online.

Mike Green, vice president of product strategy at PC Tools, said:

With online banking now outstripping phone banking for the first time in the UK, according to Apacs, the risk to consumers is growing everyday. ‘So it’s no surprise that the ICO is concerned.

The latest study from MessageLabs, an email security company, advised that phishing threats outdid Trojans and viruses for the first time through January. In the last month, there were many of such cases in which the PC users went bankrupt by losing their personal or confidential information because of not taking proper security measures.
