Sophos’s experts have warned computer users of a phishing scam that claims that eBay, the giant auction website, will be shut down for business on 27 February, but in actual fact it is an attempt to commit theft of eBay users’ usernames and passwords.
As per the report of Sophos, the hackers, with their malicious emails, claim that eBay, at the end of next month, has determined to close down its business, and is asking users to give their vote on if they are disagreed with the decision.
Besides, the email also brags that 50 per cent of eBay members are needed to declare that they would like eBay to remain open, or else it will be shuttered down forever. But, giving a click on any of the links lands the user to a phishing website, which is disguised as eBay, and has been developed to commit theft of usernames and passwords from users. Sophos has also claimed that the phishing website is hosted on a hacked server, which is belonged to a UK legal company.
The email reads:
Dear eBay Community:
We have decided to close eBay on 27 February 2007 due to the repeatedly abuses on our company. We ask your opinion on this matter and we want to know if you agree with us or disagree. Below you can make your choice.
If you want eBay to stay open click YES otherwise click NO. Your opinion is very important to us. If 50% of the eBay members vote positive eBay stays open otherwise it will be closed.
Regards,
eBay Team
