As part of a settlement with New York State’s Attorney General, Priceline, Travelocity and Cingular Wireless, three online advertisers have agreed to pay $35,000, $30,000, and $35,000 respectively, along with the promise of stopping to make use of controversial adware without the informed consent of the PC users. In addition, the advertising firms also settled to pursue the AG office’s needs for adware, software downloaded by PC users that shows advertising.
Namely; the three companies will have to disclose the adware, while it is downloaded by the consumers by gaining their prior consents, and them endowing them with matter-of-fact methods to confiscate the ads. The ads firms also will have to discontinue making use of any adware and firms that infringe the policy and make sure they learn how online ads will be offered in the future. This way, advertisers cannot any longer protect themselves from legal responsibility by ignoring how their ads are provided.
